About Karen S Mason
I love painting portraits and landscapes. If I can capture an image of someone I love in a setting that resonates with how I feel about them that’s my ideal – it’s what I’m aiming for. Quite often I find a painting reveals how I’ve been feeling a while after I have finished painting it. I just have to go with an idea and an image I feel drawn to and find out later what it’s all about. My favourite places to be are in forests and near water so these often feature in my paintings. These subjects also allow a bit of freedom to play with the paint and allow it to have its say in how the painting will turn out in contrast to the more meticulous work needed to get a likeness in a portrait. I enjoy balancing the two styles.
I took up painting in 2012 after thoroughly exercising the other half of my brain with a degree in mathematics and a 30 year long career as an actuary. I regularly exhibit in and around Surrey with Surrey Contemporaries and have had paintings selected for exhibition at AppArt and the Oxmarket Gallery.
